I've got a bigger panorama of Piazza del Campo; mind if I replace that one? --sigs

I'm concerned about the "Getting There" - this does not strike me as something that should be in an encyclopedia - surely this should be in WikiTravel? --PatrickJCollins 16:02, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "Palio di Siena" is potentially a huge matter. Maybe it should have a page by itself.. What do you think?

If we can have a non-stub article on it, I'd say go for it. -- Infrogmation 03:46, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Yes, I was thinking about writing an article, not a stub. I'm not from Siena, but I love the Palio and I belong to the "Contrada della Torre" (Tower). So, I'll be happyto write an article about that FedericoCaboni

I've added a couple of lines reporting the animalists' complaints, really actual after today's fatal incident to the horse of the Bruco, a 8yo gelding, named Amoroso. --213.255.107.33 20:22, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

University of Siena - 1204 ?

[edit]

Don't know about the date of foundation. It seems it was 1240. Don't know Italian but it is worth consulting the official website of the university.

Conflict in dates listed for the Palio di Siena

[edit]

The date of the "Palio di Siena" is listed here as the second of June. However, if you follow the link to the "Palio di Siena", it says that the date for the race is July 2. I think that the correct date is July 2. This needs to be changed.

Major Edit

[edit]

Expanded the history of Siena, made a seperate Art and Architecture section containing a lot of the existing material, added some info for travellers.

Left the palio section as it is - it's right to have a seperate page.

Most of the info comes from Siena (J Hook), La Terra in Piazza: Interpretation of the Palio of Siena (A Dundes, A Falassi), and various tourist publications. Corrections very welcome! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stuart Hardie (talkcontribs) 02:34, 21 June 2005 UTC.

Sienna vs. Siena

[edit]

Can we unify which spelling is used in the article? --NEMT 00:22, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I started to "correct" the spelling to the Italian "Siena". I had no idea that English speakers spelled it differently. Is this variant spelling still common? I'd prefer to use the Italian version. --Matthew Simoneau 21:02, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have never seen the city referred to as Sienna in any english language textbook, in italy or the us. Also, even if Sienna is the correct english spelling (which I doubt) it is more common on wiki for local city names to be used (eg: Mumbai vs. Bombay). --NEMT 15:09, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You know, case closed, we have consensus. This article is called "Siena," thus, that is the appropriate spelling in all instances. If a proponent of Sienna would like to add a section on alternate spelling/s that's fine. --NEMT 16:10, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a short comment in the first line of the text proper to cover the alternate spelling. The spelling 'Sienna' is still in use in English and can even be encountered in academic contexts, presumably written then by well-educated individuals. It does no harm to inform interested parties that there is an alternative and that it is acceptable. Another disinterested reader (talk) 21:36, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Labyrinth suggestion

[edit]

This phrase:

"Inside is the famous Gothic octagonal pulpit by Nicola Pisano (1266–1268) supported on lions, and the labyrinth inlaid in the flooring, traversed by penitents on their knees."

needs a source. The idea that labyrinths were used as penitential sites has no contemporaneous documentation that I've been able to find; it appears to be a 19th c. fabulation (I know about the books by Doob and Wright, but they have no primary citations, either). I'm watching this page, if no alternative primary medieval sources surface, might suggest removing this phrase.Dellaroux (talk) 17:43, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article has more to say about the Republic of Siena than that article itself. I would suggest we move most parts to that article. Any objections?Jeff5102 (talk) 20:47, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

palio

[edit]

There is absolute importance to add a photo of Palio! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vagr7 (talkcontribs) 10:40, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What is missing from the recently created city timeline article? Please add relevant content! Contributions welcome. Thank you. -- M2545 (talk) 07:52, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Contrada Year

[edit]

In the History section, at the end of the subsection concerning Antiquity, it is said of Sant'Ansano that his liturgical anniversary came to mark the beginning of the "Contrada Year".

I for one have no idea what a "Contrada Year" is (except it's probably to do with the Contrade of Siena), so this statement needs to be expounded on (or alternatively deleted). Nikolaj1905 (talk) 13:17, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
