WPMILHIST Assessment

crewing comment

[edit]

My notes on the British version of this state that it needs a crew of 13 to work it. 5 can be carried onboard but the rest have to follow along in the Ammo Limber.

Based on U.S. Firsthand Experience (M107 175mm Gun retubed to 8 inch M110A2 "long tube"), you could use a crew of 5 as: Section Chief (Operated hydralic spade, also as loader operated hydralic ram), Driver, Gunner (Also RTO, Radio Telephone Operator), Assistant Gunner, Number 1.

phased out?

[edit]

As far as I know the M107 and M110 have been phased out of service, with the US Army relying on the M109 155MM SP Gun and the M270 MRLS.

  • The US Army phased them out iirc, then they were passed down, maybe to the marines, but most of them ended up with allied nations.

The article lists the last M110 round fired at Ft. Drum in 1991. The cite for this is a youtube video showing British soldiers firing an M110 in Desert Storm? I was in a M110 Battalion (3rd/92nd FA, USAR, Akron, OH) in the early 90s. Considering I joined in August of 1991 I can assure you that M110s were fired after the date listed in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.219.131.157 (talk) 05:07, 27 June 2012 (UTC) I agree- I joined the Minnesota Army Nat'l Guard in 1994, and they still had 110's at Camp Ripley. In any case, if they are still in service today or nominally today, that the last round was fired some 20 years ago is impossible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.113.214.75 (talk) 07:42, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

intro

[edit]

I think it would be helpful to be more explicit in the introductory paragraph about when the M110 entered service, and in which conflicts it was employed. LordAmeth 00:10, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why does the intro say that the M110 is on a "purpose-built chassis" when the M110 shares a common chassis with the M107 and the M578? --N4aof (talk) 20:52, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like that language was added in March 2016 by an IP editor. What do the reliable sources say? Huntthetroll (talk) 22:51, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Specification box to the right

[edit]

"Detroit Diesel 8V71T". On the stamped steel Engine Valve Covers was embossed "GM", with the entire engine painted Dark Olive Drab Green (original engine) or Teal Green (replacement engine). The "Final Drive" (transmission) was painted white. <ref>Firsthand Experience<ref>Cewbot (talk) 17:08, 5 February 2024 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.155.233.1 (talk) 11:34, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

USMC service?

[edit]

I've read that eight-inch howitzers were part of the US Marines' inventory, at least during Desert Storm. Is this true? Or were the 8-in SPHs Army-only?

Need dates

[edit]

This article needs service dates to place the weapon in a historical context. On the same theme, statements such as "remains in service with the Spanish and Greek Armies" are meaningless without giving the date and source that the situation was last verified.

armament charecteriatics missing

[edit]

most articles on comparable vehicles include details of the performance of the armament, also types of shells used etc. Some idea of maximum range, amount of explosive delivered, weight of ammunition etc etc is usually found, that would be very helpful when comparing with other systems with articles, thanks if anyone can add such data

From Firsthand Experience "Red Leg" aka Field Artillery M101, M102, M107, M110A2, and Ordnance Corps Conventional Mumitions, Missiles, Nuclear Weapons, Chemical Weapons, Biological Weapons, the M110A2 was capable of using the standard HE Projectiles, Chemical Weapons Projectiles, two types of Nuclear Projectiles refered to as the Nuclear "Old Eight Inch" W33 (required crew to be N5 qualified and Nuclear PRP), and the Nuclear "New Eight Inch" M422 (no assembly required must be Nuclear PRP), Smoke Projectiles, Illumination, White Phosphorous, etc.. Direct Fire was achieved thru maximum charges (Zone 3 on a M107 175mm Gun, a Gun Zone is larger than a Howitzer "Charge" of an M110 8 inch Howitzer, many propellant "Charges" equal a propellant "Zone") as a HE projectile with fuze set to point detonating. After some M110A2s were sold to the Democratic Nation of Israel as well as the Israelis Defense Industry upgrades of M107s to M110A2s, the Israelis Defense Industry created a Rocket Assisted Projectile for the M110A2 with a range of about 21 Miles (range of the U.S. M107 175mm Self Propelled Gun (not a "Howitzer") that the Israelis Defense Forces had previously purchased). The Rumor "Legend" was that an M110A2 "Old School" (collameter, aiming stakes, panoramic telescope) with a good Gunner (Deflection), Assistant Gunner (Elevation), and FDC (Fire Direction Control) and FO (Forward Observer) could place a inert projectile (or HE) into a open 55 gallon drum (Grafenwoehr and Vilsek Training Areas).<ref>Firsthand Experience<ref>Cewbot (talk) 17:08, 5 February 2024 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.155.233.1 (talk) 11:23, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
