Welcome!

[edit]

Hi, Larrybob, welcome to WikiProject LGBT Studies!

We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying, categorizing, and improving articles of interest to the LGBT community. Some points that may be helpful:

  • Our main aim is to help improve LGBT-related articles, so if someone asks for help with an article, please try your hardest to help them if you are able.
  • Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
  • The project has several ongoing and developing activities, such as article quality assessment, peer review and a project-wide article collaboration, all of which you are welcome to take part in. We also have a unique program to improve our lower quality articles, Jumpaclass, so please consider signing up there.
  • If you have another language besides English, please consider adding yourself to our translation section, to help us improve our foreign LGBT topics.
  • If you're planning to stay, have a square in our quilt! You can put anything you want in it.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

And once again - Welcome!

Excellent, glad to have you! Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 18:07, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Queercore List

[edit]

Hi Larrybob, Thanks for leaving me a message regarding the list of Queercore bands. In my view, the value of such a list is that it provides a hitorical overview of queercore bands and since such a list is available no where else and since documentation of such a history is available no where else, the list is important. As well, the list makes these bands accessible to anyone who might be interested in such information that would otherwise have a very hard time tracking down all this information in one place; whether that be the historian, the reporter researching an article, or the kid in Idaho who doesn't have access to such information locally. It's just for this reason that I included so many external links. The Queercore movement, by neccesity, seems to have to utilize unconventional outlets to preserve and document its history, since interest in this documentation hasn't come from more mainstream outlets thus far. Such uncoventional outlets are useful also for providing accessibility to current information about Queercore that might be difficult to find otherwise. I've used Wikipedia for this purpose in assembling this list.

However, I'm well aware that interest in preserving the history of what has been referred to by Wikipedians as "minority" subcultures is not the purpose of Wikipedia. The list was erased at one point by an editor, who made the above comment, and after I appealed to the administrator Bearcat, was reinstated. You can read about this episode on the List of Queercore bands talk page. However, despite getting the list reinstated, this experience proved to me that perhaps Wikipedia is not the place to preserve such a history, even though no other venue is available at the present time. Not only can it be deleted easily by editors who may not favour such a list existing, the experience served to remind me that I have no wish to spend my time arguing with others over the value of such a history, or the inclusion of any of the articles that others have attempted to delete, and no wish to spend a lot of time on such work since it is, after all, only temporary. This being the case, I no longer spend too much time editing on Wikipedia any longer. As you can see from the above, my agenda from the beginning was not the betterment of Wikipedia, but rather the preservation and advancement of the Queercore movement. Therefore, I'll leave it to you to decide if the list of Queercore bands has value, in whatever form you choose to perserve it in, and for whatever reasons you might have to either delete, edit, or keep it.Intheshadows 18:26, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. However, I didn't miss it as such. I found the IP vandalism (obvious) and checked the previous two edits also by Scarlet 257. I do not have the specialist knowledge to judge whether the removal of Bikini Kill is or is not vandalism, as you classified it in your edit summary, but as far as I knew (and as far as I still do) it was a valid editorial action. What makes it vandalism? Tyrenius 01:41, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you discuss it with the user, as there is nothing on his/her talk page about this, rather than just branding as vandalism, which should not be applied to good faith edits - which these may be. I'm not looking any further into it myself, but it should obviously be checked whether the mentions that have been deleted were correct in the first place. Also, please remember WP:BITE. Hello Larrybob,

[edit]

I am contacting you in regards to your status as a member of WikiProject LGBT studies. First, I noticed that you expressed an interest in queer subculture and 'zines, of which the subject of this request has both edited and contributed to in the past. Then when I saw your user history includes an interest in Homo-hop, you seemed like the perfect editor for me to contact--since one of the first sections deleted from his page was that of musical collaborations, one of which discredits his appearance as "featuring..." on a track by the artist Deadlee.

Specifically, I am asking for your help regarding the Clint Catalyst article, which has been undergoing an onslaught of vandalism, particularly from the editors Hullaballoo Wolfowitz and Bali Ultimate.

"Hullaballoo Wolfowitz" has been reported as having a COF with Clint Catalyst in the past, and has even been blocked from editing his page for a period of 48 hours. However, even a cursory glance at the page's history shows that once the block was removed, he returned with what seems to be an obsession. Repeatedly, information is removed based on speculation and assumptions. I am of the firm belief that he is Gaming the System, and find it curious that all the edits he makes are from a public library. (In other words, wouldn't this make it easy for him to approve edits under another name from his home?)

I've never met Clint, though have been compiling information about him for an on-line community I started recently. In the process, this is how I discovered Hullaballoo and Bali's insistent removal of cited content (primarily under false statements about the circumstances of said citations - claiming names are not mentioned which are, falsely labeling Catalyst's spoken word performance at a noted LGBT rally at the state capitol as "open mic," accusing me of "copying and pasting" a bibliography from Catalyst's personal site when in actuality, one differs from the other). Moreover, the aforementioned bibliography (with ISBN numbers) was approved by NeutralHomer for inclusion in the article yet every time I replace it, it is again removed and my edit is claimed to be "unconstructive."

On the contrary, Hullaballoo and "Bali Ultimate" have proven themselves as "unconstructive" to the page, since the most notable of Clint's accomplishments (his status as a WGAW accredited screenwriter and television producer, awards he's received for his writing, etc.) are either removed or re-worded in the most demeaning possible manner.

As someone with noted Wiki expertise, I am writing to request your help in restoring the quality of this page. While I'm not the person who created the page, I differ in Hullaballoo's belief that Catalyst is a "minor-league celebrity" who merely had a "shrine...built by his...friends."

Not only have Hullaballoo and Bali's edits caused the article to be demoted to "start class" quality, but I find it astounding that either editor is credited as being "unbiased." Take, for example, Bali's statement about the former 'Trendsetter' section:

"This seems like an extended exercise in name dropping ("clint attended a party with a celebrity! Omg!!") almost entirely cited to blogs, social networking sites, and commercial sites. Sticking here since it is a large chunk removed in one fell swoop, but the more i think on it, the more im convinced it doesn't belong. Should have this boiled down to actual sources and real information in a day or so. But must say this is one of the single greatest fests of bad sourcing i've ever seen."

has zero basis in objective editing.

The majority of the information listed in the large chunk which he edited "in one fell swoop" are: The L.A. Times, the L.A. Weekly, Instinct magazine (which has its own page on Wiki, BTW), Frontiers Newsmagazine, Metromix (L.A.'s entertainment newspaper owned by the L.A. Times), Gay.com and Out Magazine (Out.com). None of the aforementioned are "blogs, social networking sites," or "commercial sites." Hence, his statement that "this is one of the single greatest fests of bad sourcing i've [sic] ever seen" is not only incorrect, but seems to be a character assassination.

Furthermore, this allegedly omniscient, omnipotent editor clearly does not understand the historical value of trends--especially in regard to fashion. Flapper dresses are indicative of the 1920s; Christian Dior's "New Look" (note: the trend is credited to the name of the individual associated with it) was introduced at a historically relevant period in time: that of women regaining their feminity post-WW2; then there's the mini-skirt to the 1960s--and how historical figures such as Edie Sedgwick are known first and foremost for their status as "It" Girls/Guys -- i.e., those who set the trends, or at least are noted within a country/region as being "on top of them." (Prime example: mini-tophat with Catalyst in Fall 2007 issue of the L.A. Times. Now, in Spring of 2009, these hats are carried by Urban Outfitters, H & M, and other major retail chains. Claiming the second largest newspaper in the country deem Catalyst a trend-setter is "bad sourcing" is as ludicrous as Bali's claim that "This seems like an extended exercise in name dropping ("clint attended a party with a celebrity! Omg!!")."

Precisely where is such aforementioned emphasis (i.e., Catalyst's connection/friendship/rubbing elbows with a celebrity) mentioned in any of the section that follows?:

Buzznet has Clint Catalyst as a designated "Buzzmaker,"[1] a term the site uses for members "who are top tier."[2] Buzzmakers are identified by a pink star on their page. Out of the entire site, only 40 users are designated with the "Buzzmaker badge."

June 13, 2006: L.A. Weekly’s ‘Style Council’ noted Clint among guests at the private/invite only show of musician Peaches as making an impression with a “to-die-for feathered hat.”[3]

April 4, 2007: Noted in print among the fashion show "Front Row/A-Listers" at Project Runway winner Jeffrey Sebelia's standing-room-only premiere at L.A.'s elite 2121 Lofts.[4]

July 17, 2007: Frontiers magazine runs a two page article in which Clint is deemed the 'King of What's Next'.[5]

October 18, 2007: "Clint Catalyst, at BOXeight, is on top of the trend with a miniature top hat like the ones being sported all over London." - Lawrence K. Ho, Los Angeles Times [6][7]

December 7, 2007: Nexia Holdings’ Holiday Runway event is hosted by “fashion icon” Clint Catalyst.[8]

January 2008: Instinct magazine deemed Clint a “red-carpet-stalking fashionista [who’s] in the moment before anyone else is.” ""Instinct Magazine"". http://instinctmagazine.com/celebrity-interviews/clint-catalyst-takes-our-pop-quiz.html.

February 2008: Catalyst is a Metromix party host [9][10]

March 5, 2008: Fashion Journalist Caroline Ryder deems “Clint Catalyst a queer fashion figurehead.” [11]

May 14, 2008: Metromix magazine deems Catalyst a "Fashion Renaissance Man."[12]

In Out.com’s 2008 coverage of ‘Power Gays,’ Clint Catalyst is listed as one of the three “Buzznet celebrities” who, “one 14-year old girl at a time [is] beating the hype machine at its own game.” In the same article, journalist Japhy Grant goes so far as to describe him as perhaps an “unintended role model”[13] since “At long last, for mainstream middle American tweens, the popular kids are weirdos and outcasts.”

July 29, 2008: The popular website Gay.com refers to Catalyst as a 'Scene King.' [14] When asked to describe his inimitable personal style that has garnered this title for him even within a definition of "scene kings" on UrbanDictionary.com [15], Clint replied "If Isabella Blow had a male counterpart who was portrayed in a Mark Ryden painting and weasled his way out." [14] In an interview for the Peta2/Fur Is Dead campaign, he simplified his 'look' as being focused on "Dark themes, bright colors. Hats, pomp, humor...and circumstance. A motto of mine when getting dressed-up? "Nothing exceeds like excess." [16]

March 14, 2009: Journalist Gendy Alimurung's coverage of Gen Art's fashion week kick-off show at the historic downtown Los Angeles theater states: "There are even the requisite few celebs. Clint Catalyst, looking handsomely vampire-like, is sitting across the aisle." [17]

Rather than deleting an entire section under false pretenses (especially when March 14, 2009's entry from the L.A. Weekly cites Catalyst as the celebrity--not his attendance at some party with someone else claiming such a title), couldn't this information have been used to construct a paragraph or two stating the obvious fact that insofar as subcultural "icons"/"influences"/"personalities" are concerned, Clint's personal style has made a mark during a specific moment in time and to a specific demographic?

Before anyone has a chance to yell "trivial" or "non-encyclopedic matter," please take into consideration Edie Sedgwick's own Wiki page, which states: "Sedgwick became known as "The Girl of Year" in 1965 after starring in several of Andy Warhol's short films in the 1960s.[1]"

By Bali's "logic," Segwick's status as a trendsetter ("Girl of the Year") would be irrelevant—and Andy Warhol, one would assume, would be another "exercise in name-dropping."

The way I see it, there seems to be a problem with anything that associates Clint with the term "celebrity"—hence my usage of the phrase subcultural "icons"/"influences"/"personalities" earlier.

My point is not to argue whether or not Catalyst qualifies as the "c" word; there are already countless websites for fodder of that ilk (although, for the record? MySpace.com has him listed in their "Official MySpace Celebrity Profiles Directory" under the initial "C"—a category that has his name alongside Celine Dion, Cher, Christina Ricci, et al).

On the contrary, my point is that Catalyst's historical relevance was clearly stated in this list Bali Ultimate deleted: that of a "Queer Fashion Figurehead" in a new Millennium with a new set of standards, by which “for mainstream middle American tweens, the popular kids are weirdos and outcasts.”

Larry-bob, as a Wiki editor who specializes in "niche" topics that fall within the scope of That Which Is LGBT, I ask of you as a mentor to please help "improve the general quality and range of Clint Catalyst's article."

I do not know if you are familiar with the subject, nor am I aware what your personal opinion of his work might be. What I do know, however, is this: the fact alone that a flamboyant queer author has "crossed over" or "joined the ranks" on any list of mainstream heterosexuals identified as "famous" seems quite relevant in the LGBT timeline. A landmark, even: one that's unique to my generation, the so-called "Gen Y" or "Millennial" demographic.

Along with the internet has come a sense of democratization: one by which Catalyst has been able to utilize his on-line presence (that of a "trendsetter," or whatever term one chooses to apply) as a means to establish himself as an artist.

In my case, I knew of him first by his "image" - or "status" - among social networking sites. His sense of style is what intrigued me, then led me to his writing. Put simply: in his case, personal style and sense of substance are intertwined. He's an anomaly. A "Sign of the Times." An exception.

What guidance could you give to make his page "jump-class"? Also, how can the quality of a page be improved when I'm dealing with what feels like a "tag team" against any constructive contributions? Thank you, Granny Bebeb (talk) 11:43, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Stop by the collaboration page for tips on how to improve an article, to add your support, or to suggest alternative or future collaborations.
Jobs you can do

Any and all improvements to theatre-related articles will help the project, but if you're looking for something to do, have a look at the to-do list. Some current areas of priority are:

Apologies for a lazy edit. I usually check before and after linking. If they are correct legitimate links, that add to the article, I don't think they constitute overlinking. But if you think they are unnecessary. by all means unlink them. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:53, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have now also corrected Prichard. It had already been mis-spelled. But a check would have made that obvious. Cheers. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:03, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wang Dan's Twitter Feed

[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to ask for some clarification about your recent addition of Wang Dan's Twitter account to the list of external links at Wang Dan. Apparent consensus is that external links to official twitter accounts are ok, as long as they are verified. Hence, are you certain that this is his official account? Can you give any evidence to back that up? (I've seen Facebook profiles and whatnot added to the article claiming to be Wang Dan's personal profile, which turned out to be fan-based and not actually his, that's why I ask). Thank you!

-- Joren (talk) 02:46, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I found a news article from Radio Free Asia about Wang Dan's offical Facebook page, which he says can be reached by plugging in his Gmail address, wangdan@gmail.com [6] I am not a registered facebook user but I believe that corresponds to the Facebook page [7] which has that email listed as its contact and a link in the bio to the twitter account [8]. Also if you add wangdan@gmail.com to your email contacts and then do a friend find on twitter, it will pull up the wangdan1989 twitter account. Maybe since there is a direct reference to the Facebook account that is better to link to.--Larrybob (talk) 14:24, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Unfortunately I can't read Chinese but I'll take your word for it :) It might be a good idea to add that as a reference next to the official link, and somewhere in the reference you can include a short description like "this URL says that this is his official twitter page" or something. Thanks! -- Joren (talk) 14:36, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can't read Chinese either - I'm relying on Google Translate, but the gmail address is in the article in western script.--Larrybob (talk) 14:42, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion Notice

[edit]

I thought you would be interested to know that the article for Bruce and Pepper Wayne Gacy's Home Movies by bruce LaBruce and Candy Parker is up for deletion. If you've seen the film and can add anything to the article, or if you agree it should stay up, you may wish to leave a note on the talk page telling them why they shouldn't delete it. I don't know anyone here in at WP that is involved in writing about New Queer Cinema or Gay and Lesbian movies, or culture - perhaps if you do , they might be interested in expressing their opinions too? Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Shonen Knife discography, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page My Bloody Valentine (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Wiki Loves Pride 2014

[edit]

Hi Larrybob. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --Another Believer (Talk) 15:57, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback Request

[edit]

Hi there! I have recently made a request for an assessment of the article Puppetry of the Penis on WikiProject Theatre. I have been editing this article for over a month, adding almost 3000 words, new sections, an infobox, media and more references for verifiability. I noticed you were a very active (and helpful) editor of WikiProject Theatre, and was wondering if you had the time if you could have a look at the article and provide me any feedback. Any general feedback would be much appreciated and possibly an assessment of the article for importance and quality. Thank you very much. Rubyredgirl (talk) 10:17, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Just noticed there is an article about you at Larry-bob Roberts. I assume you do not know of it, because you don't seem to have edited it yet. The article says one of your zines was "Holy tit-clamps", but your Wikipedia userpage (and website) says zine titled "Holy Titclamps". -EarthFurst (talk) 11:08, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Holy Titclamps

[edit]

I was looking through ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives online list of periodicals and noticed they apparently have all 19 issues Holy Titclamps (if I'm reading the webpage correctly) Thanks and/or congratulations. (sleepy, hope am making sense) --EarthFurst (talk) 13:33, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for keeping http://www.holytitclamps.com/ going. I have some paper copies of Holy Titclamps, but not sure where my copies are (entire apartment building got reno-victed and we moved to smaller place {so had to put stuff in storage}). If you have electronic permission for (an) entire issue(s) of Holy Titclamps, I hope you'll send those issue(s) to Queer Zine Archive Project to be added to their website. Also hope you will eventually get in contact with Dr.Agon (or that Dr.Agon contacts you) so you can get their permission for electronic reproduction to add their art to your website (AH, your old site says Dr.Agon art appeared in HT #17 ... apparently my memory glitched because I thought their art appeared in more than one issue). --EarthFurst (talk) 13:36, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message. I know the QZAP folks, and I think they have a pretty complete set of my zines, but at this point I a am not putting up scans of my zines because I am not in touch with all the contributors and don’t have permissions. I still have paper copies available but I need to do some fix up of my website because the parts that were hosted on prismnet went away when that service went out of business. They are archived on the Internet archive so someone could plug the urls in and retrieve them. I also need to get a security certificate for the website. I just need to find the time to work on it! - Larrybob (talk) 22:32, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
