Specific critique
  • Too much use of passive voice - almost the entire article. Use active voice for clear prose.
  • Many awkward constructions such as, "The live show is broadcast live on Thursday nights.", grammatical errors, punctuation errors, etc. Work over the entire article with a copy editor who is interested in the topic.
  • Entirely too much reliance on primary sources (episodes or official web sites). Many more reliable, secondary sources are needed.
  • The lead contains a statement that the show's name is based on Orwell's novel, but that is not discussed in the article or backed up by a source.
  • There is no discussion about who developed the series, how, why, etc.
  • The "Live Show" and "Live Internet feeds" headings need sources
  • The entire "Competitions" section is original research.
  • Some headings do not follow Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings).
  • The second paragraph under "Main series" is awkwardly written. It speaks of "the announcer" before we know who or what the announcer is.
  • The "Format" section is hard to follow and introduces terms that are not defined for the reader such as "HouseGuests" and "Diary Room", "power", "silver", etc. Readers who don't watch the show will not be able to follow this. See Wikipedia:Explain jargon.
  • In the first paragraph of that section, it is not necessary to put a citation after every sentence when they are all the same source.
  • The heading "Shows" needs a better title and more context, such as a lead paragraph describing what this section is about. Related shows? Spin-offs?
  • The "Criticisms and Controversy" section contains unnecessary detail about events on the show and no discussion of how the show is received by critics.
  • Some references are not properly formatted: extra brackets around links. See Wikipedia:Footnotes.

Before Big Brother 16 had ended this page looked awesome, it was displayed ina way where it was easy to read, easy to find what you were looking for, and now it's just a big mess, all the seasons are in one paragragh (mind you a long one) but it seems way too messy! It was much better when it was sperated season by season! It looked nice and not messed up like how it is now! Really hope it switches back, cause this is just too messy and all over the place!

Looks like no cares? Oh well, I'm pretty sure this page will be getting a notice for evaluation. I may just hand this article in as a high school essay, as thats how it's written, I'm sure to get an A+ on it right? Since it's "proudly" posted on this site, I'll see what my high school teacher thinks, if I get an A+ I will apologize to you, but I'm pretty sure the grade I would get if I hand in this mess of an article! I do not mean to offend anyone (much) but seriously. look at this page, it's cluttered, all the season details are shoved in one very long paragraph and an extremely messy one as well. But if whoever wrote/posted it this way is happy the way it is, again, I'm sure my high shcool teacher will feel the same! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.104.99.158 (talk) 06:56, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Voting History Formatting

[edit]

It has come to my attention some of the Big Brother (U.S.) seasonal articles have formatting issues regarding eviction statuses. Wikipedians have established a protocol, requiring the "to evict" phrase to go on a separate line. Fair use rationale for File:Big_Brother_16_(U.S.)_Logo.png

[edit]

File:Big_Brother_16_(U.S.)_Logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a non-free use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Page Updates

[edit]

I feel as though I shouldn't have to point out that this page is in terrible shape. It is filled with redundant, unimportant information. I have spent quite some time working on what I felt to be a more organized version of the page in my sandbox, only to have it reverted soon after. Each season has its own page, and a lot of the info on this page isn't notable enough to need to be featured on the series AND season pages both. The version I posted differs from the original only in that it adds some critical reviews and removes a lot of repetitive information. The info on the page was simply rearranged, using the same sources, into what I felt were more cohesive and relevant headers. I was looking forward to attempting to fix up this article, as well as the season articles, but I'm not about to spend time on an article just to get into an edit war. I'm not saying it should go back to my edit, but something has got to give with this page as it's in horrible condition. The only info I removed that could potentially be worth replacing would be the runner-up and jury vote from the season details chart, and maybe some info on the battle back as it has been in quite a few seasons now. I would love to try and fix up this page, but I'm not going to spend any more time on it unless I know we can come to some sort of agreement. -- Sethjohnson95 19 January 2018 9:30 PM UTC

Apologies, I had already begun a rough draft of the first season page. I might have exaggerated in stating the page is terrible, my apologies. I knew my edit wasn't perfect and would be changed to some extent, I just didn't expect to be reverted in its entirety. It just made sense to edit the main page for the series before beginning work on the seasons, which are what really need a lot of work IMO. Especially the "list of houseguests" pages will have few reliable sources in them. Thanks for being so cool about it all. -- Sethjohnson95 19 January 2018 10:01 PM (UTC)
No apologies needed it's not difficult to copy into my sandbox. Also before you get too far into editing the first season article one thing I want to address for the summary (especially with seasons 2-17) is to put it in the format how it is BB18 and BB19 if you wanna look at those. I plan on assisting any way I can I think this would be a big project for any editor to do by themselves. There are existing projects at WP:BIGBRO as well as a USA specific task force at WP:BIGBRO/USA however neither of those seem as active as they were at one time ESPECIALLY THE USA ONE. Also I think I'm finished editing at the point on my sandbox if you wanna take a look when you get a chance. TheDoctorWho (talk) 05:24, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think it looks good! It will probably take me a few days for the first season article, as I have a busy few days coming up. I will post in the talk page before I make any changes to the season page so other users can check out my sandbox (though I have a feeling you'll be the only one to actually notice lol. The only active BB pages seem to be the most recent or upcoming seasons). -- Sethjohnson95 20 January 2018 12:40 AM (UTC)
@Sethjohnson95: Alright so you want me to go ahead and switch it out? It's alright nothing has to be done instantly I might start on a different series article. Two Things to Discuss

[edit]

Now that Big Brother 20 (U.S.) is over, there are two issues I need to address.

  1. There appears to be a dispute over what color to use if America's Favorite Houseguest is also the winner or runner-up, as that has now happened twice.
  2. There is no official announcement for Big Brother 21 (U.S.), so it's just speculation and we should wait for the official word from production.

OfficerAPC (talk) 04:04, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The color was originally changed to the yellow(ish) color at the CBB1 article after Ross won both. It went a little back and forth but after a while for the most part it satyed. So I believe it should be the same color on the BB20 article. As for BB21, I say that Julie's announcement of "We'll be back next summer" or something along those lines as well as the casting calls is enough to add the line. TheDoctorWho (talk) 05:43, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I had no clue how the color changed tbh but during CBB1 I wasn't as active on Wiki as I usually was. My thoughts here on the matters.
  1. For the colors the American and Canadian versions only have 1 runner-up with the current format. The yellow color in the endgame template for the American/Canadian formats should only be used when there is an actual third finalist (i.e. Big Brother 1 (U.S.), Big Brother: Over the Top). When the actual winner/runner-up also wins "America's Favorite HouseGuest" I think the infobox should use the standard color with the legend saying "Runner-up ($50,000) and America's Favorite HouseGuest ($25,000)". This keeps the colors consistent between seasons and reduces the need for extra colors.
  2. While Julie said the show would be back next summer during the finale that is not a 100% conformation as CBS hasn't issued a renewal. There have been shows in the past where the hosts have gone "see you next year" and get canceled or opened up casting then get canceled. Until CBS confirms that Big Brother has been renewed there should be no "Season 21" added on the main Big Brother (U.S. TV series) and Big Brother (franchise) pages. In the past CBS has waited as late as February/March to renew Big Brother so it is entirely possible that the network may not send out an actual renewal until/after Celebrity Big Brother. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 06:06, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the colors should be consistent and that is exactly the reason for the different color. These HouseGuests won BOTH AFH and Runner-Up compared to the others having just won Runner-Up. As for "reducing the need for extra colors" this is actually taking the runner-up color and the AFH color and combining them into one so.... TheDoctorWho (talk) 15:22, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TheDoctorWho: The thing is for the winner and runner-up their field is customizable so if they win America's Favorite HouseGuest it can be added while keeping their color the same. What happens if the actual winner wins America's Favorite HouseGuest? Do we need a new color then? There are only two optional colors for this template "Legend5" by default is for an evicted HouseGuest (America's Favorite Juror/HouseGuest, season long America's Player, etc.) wins a major cash prize ($25k or higher). "Legend3" is typically reserved for the 2nd runner-up to match the Nomination/Voting history tables. If the winner or runner-up that typically gets the green/blue colors wins America's Favorite HouseGuest then their colors should be left alone with their legend amended combining the two prizes. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 20:27, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That was almost the case for Big Brother 20 (U.S.) as Tyler Crispen lost by just one vote! If we are going to use a separate color, there should just be one color in the unlikely event the winner or runner-up is later named America's Favorite Houseguest. Otherwise, we'll just stick to the established colors and then indicate the information in the legend section. OfficerAPC (talk) 21:11, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The thing is with this template you can't override the "Winner" and "Evicted" colors they are shown by default regardless if the legend is there or not. The template will automatically generate a "Winner" and "Evicted" legend at the bottom. So for example if Tyler would have won and someone would have tried to use "Legend3" for Winner + AFH for him the template would have included Winner at the bottom despite no HouseGuest having winner in their status. To get around this would require an extensive revamp of this template. This is another reason why I'm saying for the Winner and Runner-up if they win AFH leave their colors alone and just add AFH to their legend. The priority of the prizes should go Winner > Runner-up > AFH only evicted HouseGuests that win AFH should get a different color to distinguish them as the winner of AFH/AFJ. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 22:33, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Season Names

[edit]

Why are we listing the season names on the table rather than just the numbers. It throws off all of the data and makes the chart look uneven. By the way nobody says Big Brother: Death do...whatever. It was dropped like season 17 was Big Brother: Takeover. Everyone just refers to it as BB9 --Nobo71-Wikipedia.org 00:57, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

I agree, we should be consistent with what to call these in the table. OfficerAPC (talk) 02:03, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Nobo71 and OfficerAPC: I've removed the names but added Also known as notes if that's alright? TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:20, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Series details and viewership", "Main edition" table

[edit]

For the "Main edition" table in the "Series details and viewership" section, do we really need to have a column for CBS when the content is the same for each cell in the column? Seems unnecessary, especially since the table is so large. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:28, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I would have to look this up later but I believe the MOS is not to include "Network" unless there has been a change in networks airing the show. Now if BBOTT was included in the main table then yes the column would be needed. Since BBOTT is separated from the main table then "Network" should only be used in the "Digital edition" table since it aired on All Access. Also this brings another long standing question I've always had. Do we need notes beside the number of HouseGuests explaining returnees? For an overview table I don't think this is needed since each season article and List of Big Brother (U.S. TV series) houseguests notes who is new/returning. Same with the CBB2 we just need the actual # of HouseGuests which is 11. When someone clicks on the season link or visits List of Big Brother (U.S. TV series) houseguests there they can find out that there was a fake HouseGuest. IMO we should only use the notes section for details relevant to the table like the subtitles used for season 7 & 9 and explaining why BB1 and BBOTT "Final vote" is different from the rest. Things like BB11's final vote doesn't need a note because it follows the same style as the other seasons. Readers can click on the link to the season article to find out America was a juror that year. Alucard 16❯❯❯ chat? 18:57, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In line with my previous comment I don't think a note should explain the Twin Twist of BB5 and BB17 either that's best left to the article. Overall I believe there should just be 3 notes for the tables. Alucard 16❯❯❯ chat? 19:01, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, generally per MOS:TVOVERVIEW the network column is only included if a series aired on more than one network. It is also generally only included if a series has aired more than one season. I made exceptions for both those because if we go by the generally accepted standard than the OTT table wouldn't exist at all on this table. However, since it does exist I made an exception to include the network column since it aired on a separate network. So I'm neutral either way but if we follow MOS as far to remove the network column than the OTT table should be removed as well since it also violates MOS. TheDoctorWho (talk) 19:12, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alucard 16: I took your suggestion on the notes and removed all but the three. TheDoctorWho (talk) 19:07, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Season-specific covers and logos (post-BB10)

[edit]

After Big Brother 10 (American season), starting from Big Brother 11 (American season), somehow the Big Brother title cards dropped the number part. Exceptions are Big Brother 20 (American season) and Big Brother 22 (American season). Must we show readers how to differentiate the title cards and cover arts just by backgrounds if numbers and subtitles are absent? George Ho (talk) 09:04, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Voting History Table - Veto Winner/Vetoed Colors

[edit]

Should a color be added on the Voting History table for houseguests who win the Veto, or are originally nominated but are saved by the Veto winner? Right now there's a color for Head of Household (green), nominated Houseguests (blueish-purple), individual immunity (yellow), and team immunity (light orange).
