Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today
See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.
Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.
How to use this page
[edit]- Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
- Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
- Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
- Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
- Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
- Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
- If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
- Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
- Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
- Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
- Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
- Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.
Special notes
[edit]Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.
Discussion for Today
[edit]- This page is transcluded from Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024_September_15
September 15
[edit]NEW NOMINATIONS
[edit]Category:Cultural depictions of Ken Griffey Jr.
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Delete; only one category and one article. Both are in appropriate subcats of Category:Baseball culture so no need to merge. Omnis Scientia (talk) 14:34, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Category:Rugby league plays
[edit]- Propose splitting Category:Rugby league plays to Category:Rugby league mass media and Category:Plays about sport
- Nominator's rationale: Dual merge with no objection to recreate if there is more. Only two articles. Omnis Scientia (talk) 14:26, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Category:Lighthouse of Alexandria
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, not a defining characteristic of the articles in this category. It rather is a "what links here" collection. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:07, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:51, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose It covers the lighthouse's architect Sostratus of Cnidus, its destruction in the 1303 Crete earthquake, several attempts at duplication, and depictions in fiction. Dimadick (talk) 05:10, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- 1303 Crete earthquake is a good example, its epicenter wasn't in Egypt, it caused damage all over Crete and Egypt. Lighthouse of Alexandria really isn't a defining characteristic of this earthquake. This applies similarly to the other articles. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:54, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Category:People with cervical spine fracture
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: A hodge-podge of people who died by hanging or other trauma, people who were paralyzed from an injury, and people who suffered a minor injury. Generally not a defining characteristic. Walsh90210 (talk) 04:41, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- If there are people who died by hanging in this category they should be purged. I do not have an opinion about the proposed deletion. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:15, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Lean delete; if kept, people who died by hanging should be purged at the very least. Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:33, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Category:Wikipedia non-empty soft redirected categories
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: See discussion at Template talk:Category redirect#Category:Wikipedia soft redirected categories which are double redirects – the Wikipedia prefix is not needed here and renaming promotes consistency with Category:Non-empty disambiguation categories. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 03:28, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Category:Don Young
[edit]- Propose deleting Category:Don Young (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Barney Frank (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:John Dingell (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Ted Stevens (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Glenn Youngkin (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Terry Branstad (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Mark Meadows (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Tim Walz (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Joe Manchin (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Jamie Whitten (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: Practically everything in each of these categories is not "defined" by the politician, and are better served as just being interlinked. The bulk of each page are just the elections they were in or a thing named after the person. They're all made by the same category creator. Mason (talk) 21:41, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Omnis Scientia (talk) 13:52, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- Keep There are a variety of reasons why I made these. Some of them were extremely long serving politicians, many of them are really significant names in their areas. Young and Stevens have dates and places named after themselves. Barney Frank is a significant LGBT figure. Walz is literally the Democratic nominee for VP. Youngkin has his own article for his tenure as governor. Manchin has his own article for his own political positions. You have to keep them. Keep all of these. Vinnylospo (talk) 17:18, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- The question at stake is not how important they are. The question is if a fair amount of spin-off articles about them personally exist, next to the main article. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:32, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Keep I want to keep some of these because honestly. I just feel like all of the pages or categories I try to make often get removed. This is all in good faith. I seriously don’t mean any harm. When I make these articles, I have a real sense of accomplishment. I get really upset when this stuff gets removed. It almost feels like I wasted my time and I feel like no matter how often I try, I feel it leaves no impact and it’s removed. I’m just rambling here. I’m just very upset. Please don’t take any of this wrong. I really love making articles. It’s truly my passion. But how can I feel comfortable creating when I sometimes feel my work will get removed regardless? Vinnylospo (talk) 06:44, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Please don't double vote Mason (talk) 20:24, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:35, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- Keep, including the category for the Democrat candidate for V.P. A concern: only the Don Young link works to bring editors here from the category pages, not everyone who will look for this nomination will find it. Took me awhile. Please either fix that and re-set the time period or consider vacating this nomination, thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:31, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Will do. How do I make sure it focuses on the category? Vinnylospo (talk) 14:53, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- At the very least these categories need a major purge. Mason (talk) 20:25, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: I will fix the links to this nomination.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 02:35, 15 September 2024 (UTC)- Keep The election they were in should be covered by eponymous categories. Vinnylospo is doing necessary work here. Dimadick (talk) 12:54, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Category:Chemical looping technologies
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Chemical looping technologies to Category:Chemical process engineering
- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge. There are one two pages in this category, which isn't helpful for navigation. Mason (talk) 12:01, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per nom, though I am not sure if Category:Chemical process engineering or Category:Chemical processes is the right target. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:25, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- I wasn't really sure either, so any content experts would be much appreciated! Mason (talk) 17:53, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: I will drop a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chemistry.

- Keep, with potential rename to expand scope slightly for inclusion of additional related articles. I've never heard the phrase "chemical looping", but I know that pressure swing adsorption, anthraquinone process, and several decaffeination processes are all a comparable concept. Maybe something with "cycle" rather than "loop" is better? These are all like a catalytic cycle, but where the cycle is interrupted by time and/or place instead of a one-pot type of process. Thanks for the WPCHEM ping, HouseBlaster! DMacks (talk) 06:52, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- @DMacks: so how exactly should this be renamed? And which other articles can be added after renaming? Marcocapelle (talk) 08:03, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- As I said, I'm not sure of the name. I'm in the chemistry world, not engineering, so I don't know if engineers have a more-general term here. In addition to the three articles I already mentioned, also sulfur–iodine cycle (and other thermochemical cycles) and Girdler sulfide process come to mind. DMacks (talk) 08:44, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! It hadn't even occurred to me that this is about engineering rather than about chemistry. I left a notification at the WikiProject Engineering talk page. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Category:The Numbers not in Wikidata
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:The Numbers not in Wikidata to Category:The Numbers ID not in Wikidata
- Nominator's rationale: To move where the articles have been recategorized to via the {{Cite The Numbers}} temp. Consistency with Category:The Numbers ID different from Wikidata. Trailblazer101 (talk) 05:51, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- Speedy redirect. There's no need to discuss this, especially since the proposed target "rename" already exists as a category, meaning the only thing that needs to happen is a categoryredirect. Bearcat (talk) 13:40, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: The rename has already taken place in the template; should we keep a redirect?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 00:28, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Redirect per Bearcat, or just delete. I am not sure if a redirect is useful in the first place. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:12, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: I should've been more clear with my relisting comment: There is consensus we should either redirect or just delete. Which one should we do?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 00:24, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Elaboration of previous comment: if I understand correctly the redirect is not necessary for the template to work properly. So presumably it can be deleted. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:07, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
