This image that you uploaded apparently has Virginia in dark blue (indicating it has a church in the boundaries of the state) which is incorrect and should be light blue. The issue was brought up here and I thought I'd tell you. I could fix it, but I don't know how the licensing for the image would work out. Thanks ~ Bella Swan 00:29, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have more than 12 members?

[edit]

SESmith, I finally decided to bite the bullet and go ahead and share with you the page you never saw. It follows below. It mostly contains relevant quotes from Church leaders on this issue. I hope it clarifies my position. Also note that comments made by me about the content or editorial revisions are contained in brackets. That said, here it is:

[A common misconception in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is that the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles cannot have more than 12 members. The following document, obtained by my from my institute instructor, was put together for our institute class by C. Max Caldwell, a former member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy and currently serving as a sealer in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple of the Church.]

Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

There can be more than twelve members in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie made the following statement: "The proper course for all of us is to stay in the mainstream of the Church. This is the Lord's Church, and it is led by the spirit of inspiration, and the practice of the Church constitutes the interpretation of the scripture." (Bruce R. McConkie, Doctrines of the Restoration, pg. 66)

Following are examples of "the practice of the Church" constituting "the interpretation of the scripture" as it relates to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

April 1970 General Conference

President Harold B. Lee, First Counselor in the First Presidency and President of the Quorum of the Twelve, made the following statement concerning the sustaining of President Joseph Fielding Smith as the new President of the Church.

"Today's happenings have brought to me some of the most sobering reflections of my whole life. During the last ten weeks that have elapsed since the momentous spiritual experience, in company with 13 of my brethren holding the holy apostleship, in an upper room of the temple, where members of the new Presidency of the Church were chosen and ordained, I have lived my whole life in retrospect and the days ahead in prospect, to some extent." (Conference Report, April 1970, page 125)

During this same conference, President Spencer W. Kimball, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve, made the following comment: " Then dawns the notable day (January 23, 1970), and 14 serious men walk reverently into the temple of God-this, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the governing body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, several of whom have experienced this solemn change before." (Conference Report, April 1970, page 118)

Sunday, December 30, 1973

President N. Eldon Tanner in explaining the process by which a successor is chosen to be President of the Church made the following statement:

"I would like to explain to you exactly what took place following the unexpected death of President Harold B. Lee on 26 December 1973. I was in Phoenix, Arizona, to spend Christmas with my daughter and her family, when a call came to me from Arthur Haycock, secretary to President Lee. He said that President Lee was seriously ill, and he thought that I should plan to return home as soon as possible. A half-hour later he called and said: 'The Lord has spoken. President Lee has been called home.'

"Following President Lee's funeral, President Kimball called a meeting of all of the Apostles for Sunday, December 30, at 3 p.m. in the Salt Lake Temple Council Room. President Romney and I had taken our respective places of seniority in the council, so there were fourteen of us present." (L. G. Otten and C. M. Caldwell, Sacred Truths of the Doctrine and Covenants, volume 2, pages 228-229.)

[With the foregoing information, especially in light of the Bruce R. McConkie quote the information started with and the quotes from Presidents Lee, Kimball, and Tanner, it has now been proven beyond reasonable doubt that the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles can and does have more than twelve members at times. Accordingly, it is my suggestion that the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles page for Wikipedia be revised to accord with this new information. Unless a concrete argument (just one statement from a General Authority would do the trick) is presented against such a proposition, that would be my heartiest recommendation. E-mail me your opinion or leave it on my talk page either way. Respectfully Submitted, --Jgstokes-We can disagree without being disagreeable 20:55, 3 November 2007 (UTC)][reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Richardrlyman.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Richardrlyman.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 00:48, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Albertcarrington.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 10:45, 14 February 2008 (UTC). Non-free use disputed for Image:Markepeterson.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Markepeterson.jpg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 22:57, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading File:Charlesacallis.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

Fair use rationale for File:Delbertlstapley.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Delbertlstapley.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 02:32, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Areas map

[edit]

The map you made for Area (LDS Church) is gone. Do you know what the story is? Is there a good reason? Because I agree there should be one and the article still refers to a map even though it is gone. Thmazing (talk) 23:23, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ordination reason

[edit]

I'm not sure where there might be a discussion on this so I'm coming to you because you are One Who Knows when it comes to LDS/Wikipedia stuff.

I don't know how in the info box for apostles it says Ordination reason followed by something like "Death of Joseph B. Wirthlin". Elder Wirthlin's dead is not the reason Elder Anderson was ordained --- his death is merely the reason there was an opening.

Something like Reason for opening (though clunky) would be more accurate.

What do you think? Thmazing (talk) 21:43, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! A request for your input

[edit]

Per wp:CANVASSING, this is a neutrally worded notice being sent, without any type of "selection" bias, to everyone that edited fairly recently the MOS page about how to term the Latter Day Saints denominations on Wikipedia in the belief that your various and collective expertise or expertises, if that's a plural, can help us improve its wording, if possible. a bit. The most pertinent section is here. And the issue is to what degree the terms "Mormon church" and "LDS church" relate to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in specific, and to what kind of sourcing should be used to document this. Thanks, if you find time and the interest to look into the matter and offer your opinion or commentary.--Hodgson-Burnett's Secret Garden (talk) 23:10, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I started an article which I knew was of questionable notability, but it's turned into a ≥50% discussion on whether I hate people who aren't Mormon. Probably the real problem is that only two people are involved which I suppose can make it seem personal. I wonder if you would mind weighing in? And perhaps advising me on whether I should just step away from the conversation? Thanks. *cc Good Olfactory Snocrates* Thmazing (talk) 23:31, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture

[edit]

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture. I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I also am a "Mormon" and my web site has a Mormon section that contains my Book of Mormon map (pictures of actual locations), my translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs from the Book of Abraham, and other items. I have shared and discussed these with various LDS general authorities and given many fireside presentations about them in Japan, Thailand and USA. My web site sections about the USA and World also have LDS membership and temple information for each country.

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 92.25.21.108 (talk) 19:26, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Johnepage.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Johnepage.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. A tag has been placed on First Presidentcy (Latter Day Saints), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from an implausible typo, or other unlikely search term.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you believe that there is a reason to keep the redirect, you can request that administrators wait a while before deleting it. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
