Wikidwellers We have a problem

[edit]

The first google result for Victor Gollancz is http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Jgollancz.htm. It contains both Helga's text "During the late 1930s and early 1940s Victor Gollancz was heavily involved in trying to get Jewish refugees out of Germany. After the war Gollancz worked hard to relieve starvation in Germany. He founded the Jewish Society for Human Service and its first objective was to help Arab relief." and a strongly-worded copyright notice: "The narrative text on this website is copyright. This means that any school which copies the site for local use onto a school cache is in breach of copyright. If your school wishes to copy the site in this way, there is a tariff of charges. Please contact Spartacus Educational spartacus@pavilion.co.uk for details."

Okay, two problems. The second is that I wouldn't count the Spartacists as an unbiased or reliable historical source. I think I'm safe with the paraphrased early biographical info, but I'm going to try to confirm it elsewhere. The part quoted has to go; it's here on the talk page if anyone wants to try to paraphrase it. Vicki Rosenzweig 17:04 Jul 31, 2002 (PDT)

On the expulsion of Germans

[edit]

I've tried to translate what was said on the German article on Gollanz. Then discovered that it was to some part based on text from; * Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker (GfbV)

On the page the text comes from the following is said at the bottom: A GESELLSCHAFT FÜR BEDROHTE VÖLKER PUBLICATION * REDISTRIBUTION WELCOME - PLEASE QUOTE SOURCE * WebDesign: Y.BANGERT

I take it that that means it is Ok to use it. Stor stark7 15:47, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In this same section, there seems to be something wrong with the following sentence:

When Field Marshal Montgomery wanted to allot the Germans 1,000 calories a day and referred to the fact that the prisoners of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp had received only 800, Gollancz wrote about starvation in Germany, pointing out that many prisoners never even received 1,000 calories.

Or is it just me? --Technopat (talk) 11:43, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I consulted this bio for some work I'm doing and found it pretty good, but:

1- I miss a photo of the gentleman

2- The fact that he was a Jew but nevertheless campaigned for starving Germans after the war seems to be very striking and noteworthy. I think it merits some comment or a quotation of Gollancz himself explaining why he was doing this since right after the war there were so many Jewish survivors in need of everything.

Thanks for your attention~and thanks for Wikipedia and Wikidictionary, they have been very valuable for me. 21:05, 18 February 2009 (UTC)~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by BlueSkies999 (talkcontribs)

How to pronounce (Victor) Gollancz

[edit]

Anyone know how he said his name? OED lists Victor Gollancz as pronounced /ˈɡɒlænts/ GOL-ants, I watched a contemporary English newsreel which preferred /ɡɒlˈænts/ gol-ANTS. I'm inclined to go with Oxford on this one but I wonder if anyone knows different -moogsi(blah) 23:55, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW I've only ever heard the second pronunciation, with the stress firmly on the second syllable. It would, in any case, be a huge a mistake to treat the OED as 'holy writ'.Norvo (talk) 19:54, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Victor Gollancz’s support of Stalin and his killings

[edit]

You should add at least one paragraph about Victor Gollancz’s total support and propaganda for Stalin using LBC 108.194.235.71 (talk) 18:24, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
