Is this the origin of the term "white elephant"? Supposedly, someone was given a valuable white elephant which proved too expensive to keep but couldn't be gotten rid of, politically. -- Zoe

According to our white elephant page, the term started in India, before Hanno, but the exclusiveness is probably part of the reason Hanno was considered a nice gift. The Pope, apparently, was able to handle the expense nicely.<G> -_ Someone else 01:09 Feb 24, 2003 (UTC)
