Hi William, would you mind adding talk page messages to the bottom of the page? You don't seem to have a userpage yet.
I saw your addition to thrombocytopenia. Indeed, virtually every anticoagulant has been associated with a risk of thrombocytopenia; the coumarins, e.g. warfarin, are the safest in this respect (but have other problems). When ximelagatran is finally marketed, there might be some changes in the anticoagulant landscape...
Cheers, JFW | T@lk 13:16, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Wow, that must have been a dreadful experience... I must remind you that wikipedia can theoretically be read by anyone, and I would recommend being just a tad more succinct with clinical details... :-) JFW | T@lk 13:27, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

English Congregation

[edit]

I have no reason to doubt that this is a real subject, the reason English Congregation was deleted was because it consisted solely of a category link: this constitutes speedy deletion. Can you please add the category link only after you have started the actual article? many thanks. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 13:21, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot

[edit]

Hi, I've reformatted this so that it looks like other bird species articles. Please note that there is a convention that there is a lower-case redirect for bird species articles (I've done it for this one) jimfbleak 15:02, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Manta rays

[edit]

Hi. Why did you blank the redirect at Manta rays? RickK 05:56, Jul 9, 2004 (UTC)

For patent trash like this, it's best to go for delete if you want to get it speedy deleted. However, there does appear to be an amethyst python (without the rainforest bit), so it does have potential. Noisy 09:20, 11 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I don't understand why you removed the new taxobox layout on the papilio page? Is it because I omitted some levels of classification? Otherwise the use of templates makes it much easier to read and to update... Azhyd 16:35, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)

Bascially yes, the way it's set up now, I couldn't add the domain level, I'm not familiar enough with templates to futz with one. I really think that the taxoboxes should be complete. I don't exspect everybody to do complete taxoboxes but I do fill them out myself if I see stuff missing. Williamb 19:15, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)
ok concerning the domain, I've been adding it to some taxoboxes and it's been removed with the explanation that it's questionable (see [1])... Otherwise would you mind if I revert back to templates with all taxonomy information ? Azhyd 20:29, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)
Additionally, binomial name is the link prefered, not binomial name. I'm reverting a bunch of your edits. Please go to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of Life. - UtherSRG 15:02, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)
The most recent discussion on this subject on ToL is Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Tree_of_Life/Archive4#Binomial_name_v._Binomial_nomenclature.7CBinomial_name_v._Binomial_nomenclature. Although no strict usage rule was gotten out of it, "binomial name" seemed to be the strongest favorite (or least distasteful as the case may be) of all the alternatives. - UtherSRG 02:02, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

For bird articles at least, the de facto practice over a couple of thousand articles is to not include domain or subkingdom. In the absence of any agreement on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Tree_of_Life to change this, I've reverted a bunch of your edits. jimfbleak 05:35, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Superfluous ranks

[edit]

Williamb, you left these on my user page:

What to you mean by superfluous ranks!!! Seems to me you have taken on a lot on yourself to call what other people spend time adding superfluous. I have been spending quite a lot of time putting them in and I really don't feel like going back and doing them again but I will. Williamb 07:14, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC) I don't think ranks are superfluous, I think they are CORRECT.

Look I've spent several months now researching and getting the info on all the subdivisions of the taxobox correct, and I've been adding them for over a month now. Suddenly you come along after all that work and say they are superfluous. I think the ranks are of interest of themselves and find this whole tendency to dummy down irritating to say the least. Williamb 07:46, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

It's not a matter of dumbing things down. High intermediate ranks shouldn't be repeated on low rank taxon pages. To say that insects belong among the Hexapoda is important, to point out that copper-wing butterflies like every single one of their relatives belong to the Hexapoda is redundant. What is more, most such ranks are highly variable - you've surely noticed that things like domain Eukaryota, subkingdom Metazoa, subphylum Hexapoda and the like are not accepted by all sources. When they change - when wikipedia started, subphylum Uniramia would have been a better option for insects - every page that uses them has to be changed, and the extremely limited value they provide isn't worth that. It's a matter of not copying information needlessly. In contrast, low-level refinements provide additional information pertinent to the particular species or genus under discussion, and you'll note I haven't removed any. This is not simply something I decided, this is the concensus wikipedia has been working with, and while I'm sorry for lost work it would be appreciated if you could respect it. Josh 09:54, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

From what I've seen there doesn't seem to be much of a concensus at all, and I disagree. It's my time and energy involved, but if my contributions weren't needed then I guess I can do other things. The world is huge.

I know it's your time and energy, but I think the changes are harmful, since the propagate semi-standard systems. The concensus is real, followed on most articles and noted on wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life, but if you think it should be reevaluated that would be the place to discuss it. I'd argue for the current system, but I'm happy not to change anything for the time being. Please don't think your contributions are unappreciated - as I said, the low-level ranks are useful, and you deserve kudos for finding them. Josh 10:53, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

*I know that I use suborder and superfamily a lot to get my bearings in the taxobox as to where exactly a new addition belongs. Williamb 23:29, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC) Incidentally the new taxoboxes are using "Insecta" instead of "Insect"a etc. for arthropoda and all kinds of other stuff too, and it is adding huge amounts of double directs that have to be fixed. Could that be fixed at the template level?

There doesn't seem to be any reason the new taxoboxes are doing things that way - the sample at right works just fine. I think it's just that people are reconstructing them without concerning themselves with the links. Josh 03:36, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit]

Please don't change the links to Race (U.S. Census) being made by KevinBot. Even though all of the links currently redirect to the same Race (U.S. Census) article, using redirects allows the possibility to create separate articles on each in the future. olderwiser 13:16, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Bosnia vs Bosnia and Herzegovina

[edit]

In History of Croatia, those references to "Bosnia" mean exactly that, not both Bosnia and Herzegovina, but Bosnia, in the respective historical context.

I noticed that you also changed things about this on the main page of .ba, so I'm guessing you're going about bypassing redirects -- please don't, at least not without a more thorough understanding of the pages/links you're changing. --Joy [shallot] 21:31, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Camberwell beauty

[edit]

I believe that no information is better than false information. I also believe that you should have done more research before writing about Camberwell beauty. Your version of the article claims that it is spread only in Central or (Southern?) Europe and rarely found elsewhere. Wrong! How about the North America or Siberia? Also the butterly is spread far norther than you write. They can hibernate in the winter in places like Finland and Sweden. They belong to the first Spring butterflies there. No mention of the species' common name in American English. And you also wrote that the species was first discovered in Camberwell - although it is only rarely found in UK... Pretty Anglocentric discovery. If you had done a Google search before writing, you would have immediately noticed that your material is essentially flawy. -Hapsiainen 19:39, Oct 9, 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia study

[edit]

Would you be interested in being interviewed about your work on the Wikipedia?

As part of a research project conducted by the Electronic Learning Communities group at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, we are conducting a study of the Wikipedia. The purpose of this study is to explore the online community of the Wikipedia by investigating who contributes to the Wikipedia and why.

To that end, we would like to interview people who write, edit, and comment on the articles that make up the Wikipedia. Study participants agree to be interviewed about their experiences with the Wikipedia. The interview can be face-to-face (if you are in the Atlanta area), on the telephone, or via email, whichever is most comfortable and convenient for you. Participation is voluntary and can be discontinued at any time with no reason given.

If you think you might be interested, more information about the study, including how to volunteer, is available at:

http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~susanb/wikistudy.html

If you are not interested, there is no need to reply to this message, and we thank you for your time. Ikenindy 23:16, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Hi, I've started an article on Pierinae, as it was on the most-wanted list. Problem is, I'm no lepidopterist, so I'm not sure what else to put beyond listing the species. Also, do you think there should be a consistant use of either Orange Tip or Orangetip for the various species that fall into that description? -- BD2412 talk 01:15, 2005 May 31 (UTC)

Domingo Trujillo

[edit]

Hi, WilliamB! How are you? I will leave Domingo Trujillo out of the recent deaths page, but only because I don't like revert wars. Its all cool.

But the thing is, he had newly found fame. He wasn't like I think you stated or someone else (if it wasn't you forgive me), "someone who appeared on the stands several times". He was a good friend of Luisito Vigoreaux and had been appearing at his show, joking around and having a good time, for one month already. WAPA-TV is Puerto Rico's largest television station, seen by almost four million, and now by Hispanics in the United States. So he was relatively new, but he had found fame. He had been famous far longer than that 15 year old who was tragically shot and who is on the list too! "La Comay" and all other WAPA shows had his photo shown yesterday at the end. So, you see where Im coming from?

Celebrity is something that is relative. Remember, someone who is famous in Micronesia may not be known at all in England but that doesn't make the person less of a celebrity. For Domingo Trujillo, sadly, his fame was short lived as he had been appearing doing funny commentary at Vigoreaux's show for only about a month.

Well, amigo, take care! I hope we can become friends! God bless you!

Sincerely yours, Antonio Marte Planet Martin

Classical music

[edit]

Are you referring to Wikipedia:Requested articles/music? It's always been kind of a blobby mess. In general, my advice is to not classify stuff too much -- music tends to be far too fluid to make most "genres", "forms", "styles", etc largely just designations of convenience. Al is an article in Arabic

[edit]

Al is an article in Arabic, like Giscard D'Estain. I believe it is a mistake to treat it like it is another given name, not part of the surname. Yes, it makes the "A" section of categories about as long as the portions for b-z. That's life.

Unfortunately, I also think trying to shoehorn Arabic names into the given-name, surname hierarchy we use is a mistake. Some of the things that look like surnames to us are actually a tribal name, or village name. But, it would be extremely difficult to reverse the current convention. -- Geo Swan 11:58, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thai names

[edit]

No category sorting workaround is needed on Thai names, like Cherd Songsri. If he were referred to by just one name, it would be Cherd, not Songsri. I apologise that I can't explain why that is or point you towards a policy guideline on Wikipedia that explains this better, but that is just the way it is. I appreciate your efforts. Happy editing. Date formats

[edit]

Hi, Williamb, this is just a friendly reminder asking you to review Help:Preferences#Date_format and Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(dates_and_numbers)#Dates. If you don't like seeing dates written in the "14 July" format you can change your preferences so that they show up in the U.S.-style "July 14" format. All you need to do is link dates in articles by putting square brackets around them and they will be displayed according to your preferences. This feature exists for a reason. People in different parts of the world employ different styles of date presentation. Please don't try to impose the format used in the United States on articles regarding European topics, as you did to the article on Jürgen Kießling. Speedy deletion of Edna (given name)

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Edna (given name) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Speedy deletion of Cláudio Camunguelo

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Cláudio Camunguelo requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the prod template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:54, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It also has a very usable interface and has had over 11 years of R&D put into it. You would be part of the initial crowd of early adopters and be able to really get your voice heard. Please at least consider it and note that this was sent by a human being, manually, rather than some sort of automated bulk spam. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rattlemake (talkcontribs) 07:38, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Creating disambig pages

[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to let you know, when you create a disambiguation page, please don't forget to WP:FIXDABLINKS. I've already taken care of Bouman. This tool can be of some help for Panaro. Cheers, --JaGatalk 21:57, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion notifications

[edit]

Hi William. Back in November, you got either an AfD or PROD notification, and it was during one of the template testing project's experiments. If you could go here and leave us some feedback about what you think about the new versions of the templates we tested (there are links on the page), that would be very useful. (You can also email me at swalling@wikimedia.org if you want.) Thanks! Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 22:47, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Surnames on disambiguation pages

[edit]

Hi Williamb. Please stop adding surname to disambiguation pages. A page is either a disambiguation page or a surname page and cannot be both. As a result the surname tag will be removed (see Krüzen, Graafland, Heemskerk, Zervos, Covey). The surname template is meant for pages with exclusively name entries, see MOS:DABNAME and WPAPO:ENTRIES. For disambiguation pages with multiple surname entries (and other entries!) the word surname can be added as a parameter to disambiguation to categorize the page, see this MOS:DAB section. Cheers LittleWink (talk) 18:00, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not attack other editors, as you did at Talk:Deaths in 2012. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. WWGB (talk) 02:26, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Anthocharis bieti, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Riley (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 11:26, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article Euchloe guaymensis has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

5 years without a source about something that was found out recently. How can we know it is not a hoax if sources are not provided?

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Why should I have a User Name? This page should be deleted as there are no sources. How can we verify this information? Also isn't quite notable to be included in Wikipedia

Wikispecies

[edit]

Care to contribute? I was poking around Wikispecies earlier and found that you made some contributions like species:Colitis and also saw that you did stuff with species here on en.wp. I just want to extend and invitation to come back to our sister project if you think you have anything to add there. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:31, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
