Template talk:Pronunciation

Page contents not supported in other languages.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This template is a skin around the template Template:Audio . The template is like it is now a idea.

How to use; {{Pronunciation|name_of_the_file.ogg}}

To define what the word is to click on is in the template. How it looks is done by the template audio. And you only have to fill in the name of the file, more esay to use. --Walter 16:25, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Example

[edit]

{{Pronunciation|Nl-be guy verhofstadt.ogg}}

is rendered as in:

Guy Verhofstadt pronunciation (born April 11, 1953) was a Prime Minister of Belgium.

How does it work?

[edit]
Is pronunciation meant to be IPA? Linking IPA is problematic, because the link underline can obscure IPA characters. Can you provide an example of the proposed usage? Michael Z. 2005-04-14 16:38 Z
I do not understand what you mean whit IPA linking. I have used this new template as an example on Guy Verhofstadt.
This template is more easy to use because is it is smaller, you only need to include the file name. You can define a default label name for pronunciation audio files. I think the label "Pronunciation" is better for this instead of "Listen" for this type of audio files. But that is up to the EN wikipedia. But whit this template Wikipedia EN can always change the label for the pronunciation audio files.
Also a good point is that when you look at the source of the text you can see it is a pronunciation file. That is not so clear when you use the audio template. --Walter 18:18, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I see. It is a good design: much simpler to use. But I think this is premature for a couple of reasons:
  • Template:Audio is likely to change, very soon. There has been much discussion about the format, and the current format is seen as a temporary compromise until we can work out a better way to format audio pages on Wikipedia. It has changed a number of times in the last few days. Template:Pronunciation is likely to break soon, so don't start putting it all over Wikipedia yet.
  • The overwhelmingly-used link term seems to be "listen". You'd be better off discussing this, or getting people to change their minds, rather than start competing with them.
By IPA, I meant International Phonetic Alphabet which is used to show pronunciation, for example at Nikita Khrushchev.

I understand this.But I do not see how this and a special Template:Pronunciation exclude those changes. Only thing that you have if a special Pronunciation-template is that there are options. Audio can be used for different types of stuff. For pronunciation, a pice of music, a speech, the song of a bird, the sound to a device makes. It is concievable that the way of those different types are audio are displayed are different for the different types of audio use. If you only look at the pronunciation-audio;
  • you have a name, icon and a label. I think that the use of the label "listen" is not clear becuase you do not know what you will hear. That it is audio you can see do to the icon. Maybe you will hear a pice if audio where that person is talking when you click on it? But what I think is not important. When you use a special template for this you have the option to change at anytime totaly how audio-pronunciations files must be displayed. You can change the label to whatever you want whitout the need to tinker whit the articles.
  • Let say there will be a big change on the generic audio-template. That is not a problem. Like it is now the new looks will direclty online also for the pronunciation-template. And if that gives problems for some reason it is easy to fork the pronunciation template. And there now totaly no intresed for a spacial pronunciation-tempalte it can always look excatly like generic audio template. But whit the option to do it different later whitout the need to change, many, many pages.

I don't have a strong opinion on whether "listen" or "pronunciation" is a better label. You should argue this point at template talk:audio.
You're right, I don't think most of the changes to template:audio would require this one to change. But Template:Audio is already used for pronunciation in many places, so if this one is accepted, there is already a need to update many articles. Michael Z. 2005-04-16 17:09 Z

Why on Earth

[edit]

is "Pronunciation" with a leading cap (it is wrong in just about every circumstance I know of, and why is there a parenthesis around the note symbol. The parenthesis should be around everything. So instead of

Köthen Pronunciation (♫) is a small town in central Germany

or

Köthen (Pronunciation (♫)) is a small town in central Germany

it should be:

Köthen (pronunciation ♫) is a small town in central Germany

or much preferably:

Köthen (pronunciation Sound) is a small town in central Germany

One can discuss if the outer parenthesis should be a part of this template. I think they should -- Egil 06:43, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the last of the above four choices looks best. --Angr/tɔk mi 08:21, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Only problem is that in the last one, the prominent click target takes you to an image of a speaker. Michael Z. 2005-10-17 13:35 Z
I agree that this is not acceptable, but let us first agree on what the ideal thing is. -- Egil 14:17, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
