Crossing the T is a classic naval maneuver, allowing the advantage to the fleet passing the top of the T, as all ships can shoot unimpeded broadsides at the enemy, while those on the stem of the T may have their view obscured by smoke and ships will not be able to bring all their guns to bear. Most effective with sailing ships with guns that shoot to the side, but relavant to modern warships. There is a naval tactics page somewhere, so this needs a link.
