This is a list of characters in the Harry Potter series. They are all characters who have appeared in a Harry Potter-related book by J. K. Rowling.

  • Parkinson, Pansy – Slytherin student in Harry's year. Prefect and member of the Inquisitorial Squad. J. K. Rowling said Parkinson was based on real-life girls who teased her at school.[13]
  • Patil, PadmaRavenclaw student in Harry's year. Identical twin sister of Parvati Patil. Member of Dumbledore's Army.
  • Patil, ParvatiGryffindor student in Harry's year. Identical twin sister of Padma Patil. Member of Dumbledore's Army.
  • Pettigrew, Peter – Death Eater and school friend of Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Harry's father James Potter. Pettigrew betrays Harry's parents to Voldemort, resulting in their deaths. It is revealed that Ron's pet rat Scabbers is actually Pettigrew in his animagus form. Pettigrew is strangled to death by his own prosthetic hand. He is portrayed by Timothy Spall in the Harry Potter films.
  • Antioch, Cadmus, and Ignotus Peverell – Three brothers who were the original owners of the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone and the Invisibility Cloak, respectively.
  • Pince, IrmaHogwarts librarian.
  • Podmore, Sturgis – Member of the Order of the Phoenix.
  • Pomfrey, Poppy – Hogwarts school nurse.
  • Potter, Harry – Orphaned son of James and Lily Potter. Gryffindor student at Hogwarts, and co-founder and leader of Dumbledore's Army. Husband of Ginny Weasley and father of three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus and Lily Luna. He is portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter films.
  • Potter, James – Harry's father and member of the Order of the Phoenix. Killed by Voldemort.
  • Potter, Lily – Harry's mother and member of the Order of the Phoenix. Killed by Voldemort.
  • Potter, Albus Severus – Second child of Harry and Ginny.
  • Potter, James Sirius – First child of Harry and Ginny.
  • Potter, Lily Luna – Third child of Harry and Ginny. Lily Luna is portrayed by Daphne de Beistegui in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011).
  • Pringle, Apollyon — A caretaker at Hogwarts.

  • Ravenclaw, Helena – Daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. Stole and hid her mother's diadem, and became the resident ghost of Ravenclaw House after being killed by the Bloody Baron. Also known as The Grey Lady.
  • Ravenclaw, Rowena – One of the four founders of Hogwarts.
  • Riddle, Delphi – Daughter of Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange who tries to bring Voldemort back to life by fulfilling a prophecy. Incarcerated in the wizard prison Azkaban.
  • Riddle, Mary – Muggle wife of Thomas Riddle, mother of Tom Riddle Sr and grandmother of Tom Marvolo Riddle/Voldemort. Killed by Voldemort.
  • Riddle, Thomas – Muggle husband of Mary Riddle, father of Tom Riddle Sr and grandfather of Tom Marvolo Riddle/Voldemort. Killed by Voldemort.
  • Riddle, Tom Sr – Muggle son of Thomas and Mary Riddle, husband of Merope Gaunt and father of Tom Marvolo Riddle/Voldemort. Killed by Voldemort.
  • Riddle, Tom Marvolo – Slytherin student who became Voldemort.
  • Robins, Demelza – Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
  • Rookwood, Augustus – Death Eater and spy in the Department of Mysteries.
  • Rowle, Thorfinn – Death Eater.
  • Runcorn, AlbertMinistry of Magic investigator of alleged Muggle-borns.

  • Thicknesse, Pius – Minister for Magic while under the Imperius Curse. Replaced by Kingsley Shacklebolt.
  • Thomas, Dean – Gryffindor student in Harry's year. Member of Dumbledore's Army.
  • Tonks, Andromeda – Sister of Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy, and the mother of Nymphadora Tonks. Disowned by her family for marrying Muggle-born Ted Tonks.
  • Tonks, Nymphadora – Daughter of Andromeda and Ted Tonks. Auror and member of the Order of the Phoenix. She marries Remus Lupin and gives birth to a son, Teddy, before she and Remus are killed in the Battle of Hogwarts.
  • Tonks, Ted – Husband of Andromeda Tonks and father of Nymphadora Tonks. Killed by Snatchers.
  • Trelawney, Sybill – Hogwarts Divination professor. Uttered a prophecy that prompted Voldemort to attack the Potters.
  • Twycross, Wilkie – Hogwarts Apparition instructor who works in the Department of Magical Transportation.

U

  • Umbridge, Dolores – Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic, Hogwarts High Inquisitor and temporary Headmistress of Hogwarts. She teaches Defence Against the Dark Arts during Harry's fifth year, and persecutes half-bloods and Muggle-borns under Voldemort. Sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban. Umbridge is portrayed by Imelda Staunton in the Harry Potter films.

  • Warren, Myrtle – Muggle-born Ravenclaw student who attended Hogwarts with Tom Riddle.[14] Killed by a basilisk in a bathroom, which she haunts as a ghost after her death. Riddle used her demise to create his first Horcrux. Known to students as "Moaning Myrtle".[15] J. K. Rowling said the inspiration for Myrtle was "the frequent presence of a crying girl in communal bathrooms, especially at the parties and discos of my youth."[16] Myrtle is portrayed by Shirley Henderson in the Harry Potter films.
  • Weasley, Arthur – Muggle-obsessed Ministry of Magic employee and member of the Order of the Phoenix. Husband of Molly Weasley and father of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny Weasley. Portrayed by Mark Williams in the Harry Potter films.
  • Weasley, Bill – Oldest son of Arthur and Molly Weasley, and Gringotts employee. Married to Fleur Delacour.
  • Weasley, Charlie – Second son of Arthur and Molly. Works with dragons in Romania. Member of the Order of the Phoenix.
  • Weasley, Fred – Son of Arthur and Molly and identical twin brother of George Weasley. Beater for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, member of Dumbledore's Army, and co-owner of the joke shop Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. Killed in the Battle of Hogwarts.
  • Weasley, George – Son of Arthur and Molly and identical twin brother of Fred Weasley. Beater for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, member of Dumbledore's Army, and co-owner of Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. Married to Angelina Johnson.
  • Weasley, Ginny – Youngest child and only daughter of Arthur and Molly. Gryffindor student one year below Harry. Seeker and Chaser for the Quidditch team and member of Dumbledore's Army. Married to Harry. Ginny is portrayed by Bonnie Wright in the Harry Potter films.
  • Weasley, Molly – Wife of Arthur Weasley and mother of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny. Member of the Order of the Phoenix. She is portrayed by Julie Walters in the Harry Potter films.
  • Weasley, Percy – Third son of Arthur and Molly. Gryffindor prefect and Head Boy, then Ministry of Magic employee. He becomes estranged from his family but fights alongside them in the Battle of Hogwarts.
  • Weasley, Ron – Youngest son of Arthur and Molly who is best friends with Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. Gryffindor Quidditch Keeper, prefect, and co-founder of Dumbledore's Army. He is portrayed by Rupert Grint in the Harry Potter films.
  • Wood, Oliver – Gryffindor Quidditch Keeper and captain who is four years above Harry. Wood is portrayed by Sean Biggerstaff in the Harry Potter films.

  • Yaxley, Corban – Death Eater. Head of Magical Law Enforcement under Voldemort.

  • Zabini, Blaise – Slytherin student in Harry's year.

  • Sir Cadogan – Armored and somewhat mad knight occupying a painting in Hogwarts.
  • Crookshanks – Intelligent cat belonging to Hermione Granger.

  • Gornuk – Gringotts goblin who goes on the run from Death Eaters in Deathly Hallows along with fellow goblin Griphook, plus Dean Thomas, Ted Tonks, and Dirk Cresswell.
  • Grawp – Giant and Hagrid's half-brother.
  • Griphook – Gringotts Bank goblin who helps Harry and his friends steal Helga Hufflepuff's cup from within the Lestrange vault.

H

  • Hedwig – Harry Potter's pet owl. Killed during the Battle of the Seven Potters.
  • Hokey – House-elf belonging to Hepzibah Smith.

  • Leanne – Friend of Katie Bell and a member of Dumbledore's Army. Along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, she is present when Katie touches a cursed necklace intended to be given to Dumbledore.

  • Peeves – Hogwarts poltergeist, a mischievous magical being.
  • Pigwidgeon – A tiny mischievous owl belonging to Ron Weasley. Called "Pig" for short.

  • Scabbers – Ron Weasley's pet rat in the first three stories who is revealed to be a wizard in animal form: Peter Pettigrew.
  • Scabior – Snatcher who captures Harry, Ron and Hermione in Deathly Hallows.
  • Hepzibah Smith – an extremely wealthy, well-born old witch who enjoyed collecting antiques and collectibles; introduced within Dumbledore's Pensieve.

  • Tom - Bartender of the Leaky Cauldron.
  • Travers – Wizard and Death Eater who escapes from Azkaban after Lord Voldemort's return.
  • Trevor – Neville Longbottom's perpetually-misplaced pet toad.

W

  • The Weird Sisters – a wizarding rock band. They performed three songs (all composed by Cocker): "Do the Hippogriff", "This Is the Night" and "Magic Works".[19] A full music video of the band playing at the Yule Ball is included as an extended scene on the Goblet of Fire DVD. In 2005, Warner Bros., the international distributor of Goblet of Fire, was sued for trademark violations by members of a Canadian band named the Wyrd Sisters.[20][21] In the Goblet of Fire film, the band was played by the following musicians:
  • Winky – A female house-elf who belonged to Barty Crouch Sr until he sacked her, then worked in the Hogwarts kitchen.
