Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia, Wwoods.

Judging from the work you've done, it seems that your forte is in geography; you can find plenty of articles in need of help in this field or others at Wikipedia:Pages needing attention.

You might find these links helpful in starting new articles or helping with existing ones: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump, or ask me on my talk page.

  • You can sign your name on talk pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

Thank you for your contributions; I hope you continue to help us.

Thanks for editing that USS Barry (DD-933) article. I was actually in the process or doing the same thing you did as I noticed your edit, but ya beat me to it. --ScottyBoy900Q 13:52, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

  • In response to the message you left in my user talk, I was thinking along the same lines originally, but then I realized that it doesn't hurt listing things in both categories. If someone was just browsing categories, they might come across Category:US_ships before even seeing Category:US_Navy_destroyers. Are you suggesting that it is a negative thing to list in more than one category? --ScottyBoy900Q 17:14, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • "As it is, if someone is on the 'US ships' page, they can drill down to the 'US destroyers' page in two clicks. And there's room for more "horizontal" categories; for instance, DC Washington, DC"
I understand what you're saying, I just don't see anything wrong with double listing, especially if you're looking to catch a viewers eye quickly and without him/her having to sort through different subcategories. --ScottyBoy900Q 23:18, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I uploaded a different picture that I thought might look better on the USS Virginia (SSN-774) article. I didn't want to change it though without seeing what you thought since it looks like you just added the current picture to the article on 16 Aug 2004. You can see the picture I just uploaded Image:USS_Virginia.jpg. What do you think. It is more in the style of other submarine pictures in articles here. Just a thought. ScottyBoy900Q 00:14, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • I checked and I couldn't find any other information about that picture that what was in the image description. Just FYI. ScottyBoy900Q 06:12, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You've moved the short stories contained within Borders of Infinity to their own section. This would not be such a bad thing except that you've managed to lose the combining story (Miles reporting to Illyan) in the process. If you can think of a way to restore the story before I can, you go for it. --Phil 09:42, Feb 18, 2004 (UTC)

List of People by Name

Thanks for your interest in the various pages in the tree that List of people by name is the root of.

You should be aware that the procedure, suggested by User:Rfc1394, is (besides general issues that have also not yet been addressed on Talk:List of people by name) not suitable for pages like List of people by name: Ma that have been subdivided into ranges of 3-letter combinations. (It may be time to start posting my work-in-progress analysing the scalability problems involved.)

The special case resulting from

List of people whose last name is "Ma"

is a confusing one, as i hinted in the edit summary (my last entry in Ma's Page history and discussed in some detail on Talk:List of people by name: Ma-Mb.

I'd be glad to discuss further, especially if i've left you confused; you can edit User talk:Jerzy or just edit this page below this note, to contact me. (I don't check EMail very often.)

New faces at WikiPedia are always welcome, and let me know if i can help you with this or other aspects of what i think is a great institution. -- Jerzy 21:28, 2004 Feb 21 (UTC)

Re: Constitution class starships

Good idea. I'll get right on it. Thanks, Djinn112 16:32, Mar 16, 2004 (UTC)

Pearl Harbor

Thanks for restoring the last few lines; I tried to revert it but was using a different computer than I usually do and it wasn't working out. Doovinator 18:22, 15 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Text formatting

  On the formatting thing, a paragraph that starts with blank spaces doesn't
  get wrapped, so you have to scroll sideways

Got it. Thanks, friend!--Roland Walker 19:34, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Big Bang

Actually, I put some muslim claims (singular) on purpose, because I only knew about the one that wrote the comment in the first place...hear the joke about the astronomer, the physicist and the mathematician in Scotland? They got to Scotland in a train a saw a black sheep. The astronomer said "Oh, in Scotland all the sheep are black", the physicist replied "In Scotland there is at least one black sheep", finally, the mathematician said "In Scotland, there is at least one sheep with at least one side black"...I guess I wanted to be tha mathematician this time...Greetings --AstroNomer 07:02, May 17, 2004 (UTC)

There's an old Polish proverb that says

Are you a fan too? I'm seen them all so many times I've lost count. -- Decumanus 07:14, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing that quality external link at "Fraktur". I'm thrilled to find a collection of my favourite type of fonts. Excellent link. --Menchi 12:18, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Lunar space elevator

Could you take a look at Lunar space elevator? I question what relevance Lagrange points would have to such a system. I would think that the points would be at far greater distances than the necessary height of such an elevator. Rmhermen 17:36, Jun 30, 2004 (UTC)

SAVIOUR!

You, sir, are my SAVIOUR! You took the time to split my West Wing episode list from the article! I love you! I would have done it, but I'm too lazy! No more messy TOC in The West Wing (television)! You are my God! Thank you! List of The West Wing episodes rules! SAVIOUR! blankfaze | •• | •• 21:32, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

  • I took care of the link back issue... yeah I added all that stuff in, but forogt about the whole TOC thing and then afterwards was to burned out on the project to fix it. So, merci. blankfaze | •• | •• 21:58, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment on Stargates

Thanks for backing me up over on Stargate (device), BTW. When I get involved in a long and apparently irreconcilable disagreement with just one user like that I start getting paranoid that perhaps I really way am out in left field and just can't recognize it from the "inside." :) Bryan 17:31, 11 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Copy pictures

Is it a copyvio if I copy a picture/photo from a different language wikipedia site.  ??? eg. from nl.wikipedia.org to eg.wikipedia.org

To the best of my understanding, mostly no. Most images on Wikipedia (and all text) are released under the GFDL (although I believe it is possible to dual-license images somehow, and some images fall under fair-use, which is country defendant), and as such you may not only import images from other Wikipedia sites, you may also, if you cite your source, use them in private ventures of your own. Each image page should contain a copyright notice at its bottom (see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for examples). The only thing that is advised is that you insert other languages tags in both the original image page and the one you created, so as to prevent images from being imported twice, and to enable updating them in all Wikipedias if changes are made. -- Itai 03:32, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)
How do I link a de. page to a en. image? Or alternately, make a de. copy. I suppose I could download and reupload it, but that seems awfully clumsy.
--wwoods 17:16, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)
It's clumsy, but that's how to do it. — Chameleon My page/My talk 18:05, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Hi, I moved this from the village pump as it was time to archive it and I didn't know if you'd seen all the replies yet. Angela. 23:54, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

WikiProject Melbourne

I've noticed that you've started a few of the articles for Melbourne's railway lines, which is a great help. If you're interested, there is a WikiProject Melbourne (talk page) which, among other things, covers stations and railway lines. If you want to help, that'd be great; feel free to add yourself to the member list. (There is also a list of open tasks). TPK 12:47, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)

System Lords

Thanks for taking the time to prune the doubled links from the System Lords article. I wasn't sure if pruning was the correct method. KorbenDirewolf

Mixed Roots & Split Infinitives

I was always taught to never split the infinitive. I also learned the saying, "Never a sentence a preposition end with." I can live with silly rules. I guess that my concern was that many, if not most, instinctively get what "apijove" and "perijove" mean, "apizene" and "perizene" are non-instinctive and obscure, even to the fairly sophisticated (if I may be so bold as to include myself in such a group). But I have learned a long time ago not to get in a edit war with someone whose basis for argument is "it's bad form", or "it's simply not on," so I just leave my comment on the talk page and move on.

Hill/Roche Sphere

Just like to point out the alternance of Hill and Roche in the text was intentional --trying to avoid favouring one over the other. No big deal.  ;-)

Thanks for repairing the Arctic Explorers article

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for repairing the vandalism at the Arctic explorers article. Someone added two bogus "explorers" to the stub. I personally researched the two bogus "explorers" and found that they were anything BUT Arctic Explorers. Thanks again. :)

Kittery, Maine

Was there a reason for doing a cut and paste move instead of properly moving the article along with the edit history? olderwiser 21:18, Oct 25, 2004 (UTC)

I couldn't simply rename Kittery (town), Maine to Kittery, Maine, because that already existed--as a redirect page. I looked at the edit history, and there didn't seem to be anything contentious getting left behind.
—wwoods 21:30, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
It's generally bad form to do cut and paste moves, regardless of whether there is any contentious eidt history. Any admin can delete a redirect in order to properly move a page. I will do so now. olderwiser 21:33, Oct 25, 2004 (UTC)

Submarines

Ahoy, Ww! Should we coordinate our DANFS conversions? I've prepared a couple of articles only to have you beat me to them, and now I see we've collided as Aspro. Shall I concentrate on the S-boats and the few remaining LAs and leave the Balaos to you? --the Epopt 03:26, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Fine! That collision took me by surprise. There's not much point in duplicating effort.
Should we have a more standardized format for these articles? Here's the template I'm currently using: User:Wwoods/Balao class page template. It's evolved somewhat from the one I started doing the Gatos with.
One thing I've noticed is that about half the ship articles have
USN Jack Career

and the other half have
Career USN Jack

I don't think it makes much difference but...
Also, I've been breaking the long articles into sections with
NNth war patrol, MONTH [YEAR] -- MONTH YEAR
That looks nice enough scrolling down the page, but looks awfully messy in the Table of Contents. Any suggestions?
For the S boats, should something be done to disambiguate the USN S's from the RN and Italian S's? And maybe the subclasses of USN S's?
—wwoods 16:50, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Okay, you're Balao, and I'll finish the LAs, then write the S-boat class page, which should give us direction on how to organize them. We should definitely disambig the various nations. If you want to take all the articles with the jack to the left and convert them to the right, I'll start converting the ones on the right. We can meet in the middle. (That, I say, that's a joke, son.) As for the template, I have no particular suggestions. I've been using == Nth War Patrol == without dates. --the Epopt 03:58, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Italian submarines

Should have article names like Italian submarine Gianfranco Gazzana Priaroggia (S-502); see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ships). Gdr 14:52, 2004 Nov 8 (UTC)

World War II escort aircraft carriers

Some of the Commencement-class escort carriers served in World War II and some did not, so when I categorized them I split them up among the WWII category and the plain old US Navy category. When you created the Commencement class category for them and moved them all over into it en masse, this distinction was lost and I'm going back through all the Commencement class ship articles to restore the WWII categories. This isn't really a big complaint, just a request that you be more careful not to get rid of informative distinctions like this in the future. Bryan 03:31, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Did you know has been updated

And an article you created recently has made the line up and is now featured on the main page. Enjoy! -- Mgm|(talk) 14:41, Nov 14, 2004 (UTC)

Redirect you created at "Travis AFB"

Hi, you created a redirect from Travis AFB to Travis Air Force Base, but there is currently no article at Travis Air Force Base. (It may have been deleted since the redirect was created.) Wikipedia policy is to get rid of redirects to non-existent pages, and someone listed Travis AFB on WP:RfD If you want the redirect to stay, you will need to create something at Travis Air Force Base (even a stub will do), or else the redirect will go away. If you do create the target, you don't have to do anything on WP:RfD (we'll eventually notice the target is there), but if you do, just delete the entry for Travis AFB. Thanks! Template modification problem

Okay, this took me a little longer to work out than I would have liked. If you know CSS the explanation is fairly simple, it's because the styling for <p> is defined as

p {
    margin: 0.4em 0em 0.5em 0em;
    line-height: 1.5em;
}

however, inside objects marked as id=toc, the margins are overruled by

#toc p { margin: 0 }

switching to class=toccolours (where the margins are undefined) the margins will fall back to their original wider settings.

The correct solution to this would be to add

.toccolours p { margin: 0 }

to the monobook css and the common css. This would need a developer to do it.

The common css also explains the switch from blue to grey (I assume you're not using monobook) because the styling for .toccolours matches the monobook #toc rather than the common #toc (presumably it was just copy-pasted from the monobook css). That should probably be fixed also. - 14:50, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC) Lee (talk)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking.
